Phoenix Day

Phoenix Day is on January 26th 2026!

One of ICS's favorite tradition, Phoenix Day is where you get to spend the whole day exploring hands‑on workshops taught by amazing parents and volunteers. You might learn how to make sushi, create cultural art, design something new, cook a dish from around the world, or try a craft you’ve never done before. Every workshop is different, and every student gets multiple chances to try something fun. It’s a day to be creative, try new things, and celebrate our Phoenix community so bring your curiosity, your best attitude, and get ready for a full day of discovery.

 

CULINARY ART

Sushi Taste of Asia By Nicole Schulman
Sushi Taste of Asia

Practice making your own Sushi, maki rolls or hand rolls. Finish your meal by creating a refreshing Thai inspired dessert, Kluay Khaek (กล้วยแขก). You will batter and fry bananas and serve alongside homemade coconut ice cream. Choose from a variety of sushi ingredients including vegetables as well as some fish/shellfish ingredients as options. (Allergens present, but optional, to include in your sushi: Fish, Shellfish, Soy, Sesame, Egg, Coconut. Soy sauce alternatives available and fish/shellfish ingredients can be kept separate from others. Allergens present in Dessert, but optional: coconut and sesame) Gluten Free, Dairy Free & Peanut Free.

We will be learning how to make a Mediterranean favorite, keftedes! Keftedes are Greek meatballs that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, as a main dish with pita, or as a topper in a Greek salad. We will also be making a traditional Greek salad with some feta and tzatziki on the side. Salad can be deconstructed to accommodate dietary requirements. Ingredients include: pork, beef, herbs & spices, eggs, olive oil, gluten products (pita & breadcrumbs), tomato, cucumber, red onions, kalamata olives, and dairy products (Greek yogurt & feta).

Learn how to make pasta dough using just a board and your hands! You’ll get your hands floury making Pici, a thick, spaghetti type noodle from Tuscany. Ingredients: Flour and Olive Oil. Optional Ingredients: Pasta Sauce & Basil.

 
Fava Beans and Waffle Breakfast By Afnan Dallasheh

Introduce a dish that is authentic to the Middle East. Fava beans presented in different versions. This one will be be like a chilli soup but different. Waffles add the sweat taste to complement the savory flavor of the fava beans ( Foul ) .

Festivals, Seasons, and Stories of Asia

In many Asian cultures, sweets are not just food; they are vessels for history, seasonal changes, and family values. We will explore the symbolic meaning and creative craft of those lovely sweets, understanding how the sweets embody seasonal celebrations, family heritage, and artistic expression.

Through guided discussions, hands-on crafting, and mindful tasting, students will explore how culinary traditions connect with art, history, and identity. Along the way, they’ll build creative confidence, develop fine‑motor skills, and experience the joy of making sweets that tell meaningful stories.

In this hands-on acrylic painting class, students will create a vibrant artwork while learning essential painting techniques such as color blending, layering, and brush control. The session is guided, engaging, and designed to encourage creativity and confidence in a fun, supportive environment. No prior painting experience is required, and each student will take home a finished artwork.

Henna, the Persian name for Lawsonia inermis, a flowering desert shrub that produces red dye. Twice a year the henna leaves are harvested, dried, and ground into a fine powder. Henna is a natural dye made from the leaves of the henna plant, and it has been used for centuries in many cultures to create stunning temporary designs on the skin. In this class, we’ll practice some fun and simple designs and create our own artwork. Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before—this is all about having fun and expressing your creativity. Let’s get started and make some amazing henna designs together!

In this class, we’ll bring this timeless storytelling tradition into a modern context with a global twist—the 2026 World Cup! Students will learn the visual language of Warli motifs and explore how to depict dynamic scenes of teamwork, movement, and community, inspired by soccer. Students will create a Warli artwork mural that blends cultural heritage with the excitement of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

In this Phoenix Day class led by the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee, you’ll explore patterns from different cultures and learn how art can express identity, community, and belonging. This class is all about discovering how creativity connects us, even when we come from different places. Using aluminum embossing, students will create artwork inspired by global patterns that have been shared across cultures for centuries.

Crochet is a type of handicraft that uses a small hook and yarn to create fabric by looping stitches together. In this activity, students will learn basic skills in a fun and hands-on way.
We will work on small, beginner-friendly projects such as crochet star decorations and crochet coasters. This activity is designed to be relaxing and creative, allowing students to enjoy making something they can be proud of.

In this hands-on workshop, students will step into the role of an architect and learn how real buildings come to life — from initial concept to final design. Through an interactive design thinking approach, participants will:

  • Meet the Users - the three sisters: Conduct interviews to understand who will use the space and what they truly need
  • Read the Land: Analyze site conditions, context, and constraints that shape design possibilities
  • Solve Real Problems: Develop creative architectural solutions that balance user needs, environmental factors, and design requirements
  • Think Like a Designer: Experience the complete design process architects use in professional practice.

Students will work through a realistic design challenge, learning to listen, observe, analyze, and create thoughtful solutions. By the end of the workshop, they'll understand that great architecture isn't just about beautiful buildings—it's about designing spaces that genuinely serve the people who use them.

No prior experience necessary—just bring your curiosity and creativity!

At its heart, Bollywood dance invites every performer to embrace vibrant expression and joyful movement.

Bharatanatyam Basics: Step In!

Bharatanatyam, one of India’s oldest classical dances, originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu and carries a rich heritage of thousands of years. This class introduces the foundational grammar of the art—hand gestures, basic steps, and coordinated head–eye–neck movements—along with expressive storytelling. Students will learn core basics and enjoy a live demonstration of two traditional pieces.

Let's learn to count....1,2,3....! Konakkal is the art of reciting rhythmic syllables in Carnatic music (classical music of south India). A set of these syllables, which mimic drum strokes, is called a solkattu. Konakkal is way to express rhythmic ideas across genres; any one can understand, create and recite complex rhythm patterns.
